UN General Assembly HLID on World Water Day

arton4244On 22 March 2013, a High-Level Interactive Dialogue (HLID) of the UN General Assembly will be convened to mark the International Year of Water Cooperation as well as the twentieth anniversary of the proclamation of World Water Day (A/RES/47/193).

Building on previous events, this HLID will discuss the fundamental role of water cooperation in achieving water security. One of the main objectives of the event is to raise awareness and carry out advocacy at the highest level on the importance of water cooperation. There will also be an opportunity to share experiences and highlight the lessons learnt over the last 20 years in water cooperation.

The HLID on Water Cooperation will also complement the Official World Water Day celebrations to be held the same day in The Hague.

The Interactive Dialogue in New York will address the four themes of water cooperation:

• Water Cooperation is key to poverty reduction social equity and gender equality;
• Water Cooperation creates economic benefits;
• Water Cooperation helps preserve water resources and protect the environment;
• Water Cooperation builds peace.
