Sanitation for All: the drive to 2015

arton3482Although access to sanitation has been recognized as a human right since 2010, more than 2.6 billion people still lack access to improved sanitation. Therefore, on 21 June, the UN officially launched “Sustainable sanitation: The Five-Year-Drive to 2015,” in order to improve the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide by providing them access to basic sanitation. As such, the Five-Year-Drive is also intended as a push to speed up progress on the MDG target of improving global sanitation by 2015 – a target that until today is lagging far behind.

The State of the World’s Midwifery 2011: Delivering Health, Saving Lives

While assessing midwifery services and issues in 58 developing countries around the world, the newly released report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) finds that up to 3.6 million deaths could be avoided each year if midwifery services are upgraded by 2015. “Every year approximately 350,000 women die while pregnant or giving birth, up to 2 million newborns die within the first 24 hours of life, and there are 2.6 million stillbirths,” the report explains.
