Civil society coalition on the responsibility to protect

28 Jan 2009, saw the launch of a new civil society coalition on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). A principal according to which it is the duty of individual states and the international community to protect at-risk populations from ethnic cleansing, war crimes and other gross human rights abuses. Enunciated by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2005),R2P was unanimously approved by the Heads of State and Government at the World Summit in September 2005.

The coalition seeks to raise awareness, strengthen and promote the implementation of the R2P Principle. To read about the press conference held by the civil society coalition, click here :
