NGLS e-Roundup on the 56th Session of CSW: Rural Women – Agents of Change Indispensable for Sustainable Development

With “the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges” as the priority theme, the 56th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW56), held from 27 February to 9 March 2012 at UN Headquarters in New York, turned its attention to rural women. Differently from previous CSW sessions, the Commission did not adopt “agreed conclusions,” as Member States could not find agreement on the proposed text in the draft outcome document. Nevertheless, it did result in the adoption of various draft resolutions and one decision (see e-Roundup, page 5).

This NGLS e-Roundup, the largest ever produced by NGLS, therefore seeks to highlight the outcomes of the main debates at CSW and its complementary side events, particularly in relation to the priority theme on empowering rural women. It discusses the issue of climate change; women’s access to land, resources, and education; policy implementation; financing for gender equality; sexual and reproductive health rights; and women’s political participation.

To explain the challenges around these issues in more detail, the e-Roundup features interviews with various key stakeholders, including Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General/ Deputy Executive Director, Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnership Bureau, UN Women; the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); Jan Peterson, Chair of the Coordinating Council of the Huairou Commission; Climate Wise Women Tracy Mann and Constance Okollet; Marina Durano, Member of the Executive Committee of DAWN; and Lalen de Vela, Activist School Coordinator at Isis International.
