MY World presents initial results to High-level Panel meeting in Monrovia

On 30 January, the first results of the My World survey, an innovative global initiative to encourage people’s participation in the process of defining the next set of global goals to end poverty, were presented to the High-level Panel at its meeting in Monrovia. It includes results of online responses and of a recent offline pilot study held in Liberia.

The offline pilot study’s results illustrate the continuing importance of the current MDG agenda, but also the very high priority given to improved access to infrastructure of all types, to better governance and security, and to job opportunities. Gender equality and support for people who can’t work also ranked in the top ten for some groups.

The online responses to date are dominated by responses from countries that score very high on the human development index (HDI). The survey therefore does not yet reflect a truly global set of priorities. For now, “good education,” “an honest and responsive government,” as well as “better healthcare” seem to be the top three priorities for global participants, as well as for low and medium HDI countries. However, MY World notes that in future surveys online, offline and SMS responses will be combined and weighted to provide a more accurate global picture.

About My World
The United Nations and partners teamed up to put in place MY World, an options survey that asks individuals to select six out of sixteen possible issues they think would make the most difference to their lives. The sixteen issues cover the existing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), plus issues of sustainability, security, governance and transparency. More information is available here.
