The United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is an inter-agency programme of the United Nations mandated to promote and develop constructive relations between the United Nations and civil society organizations.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have co-published a book that finds that the development of competitive agro-industries is crucial for creating employment and generating income opportunities, as well as enhancing the quality of and demand for farm products.
The publication, Agro-industries for Development, suggests that agro-industries can have a real impact on international development by increasing economic growth and reducing poverty in both rural and urban areas in developing countries. But it warns that, in order to avoid any adverse effects on vulnerable countries and people, sound policies and strategies for fostering agro-industries will be required.
It includes contributions from agro-industry specialists, academic experts and UN technical agencies. Chapters in the book address the strategies and actions required to improve agro-industrial competitiveness in ways that can create income, generate employment and fight poverty in the developing world. The book also highlights the current status of agro-industries, proposes a future course for the sector and draws attention to the significant contributions it can make to international development.
This publication is one of the outcomes of the first Global Agro-Industries Forum (GAIF), held in April 2008 in New Delhi, India. The Forum focused on improving both competitiveness and development impact. It also dealt with the contribution of agro-industries to economic development and the challenges they are currently facing.
Agro-industries for Development is available online.
